When to Check Your Generator's Oil

Servicing your backup generator is essential to its long-term performance and reliability. A general rule for knowing when to check and/or add oil: if you have been running your unit for 4–5 days straight, or if it has been sitting for longer than 6–8 months with no use.

Running for 4–5 Days Continuously

If your generator has been running nonstop during an extended outage, it’s time to check the oil level and add more if necessary.

Sitting Unused for 6–8 Months

Long periods of inactivity can degrade oil quality. Always check before the storm season begins or before extended use.

Let the Generator Cool First

Never add oil to a hot generator. Allow it to cool down completely before removing the dipstick or adding oil.

Turn Off the Breaker — Not the Emergency Stop

Make sure to turn OFF the generator breaker first. Never use the Emergency Stop switch unless there’s a real emergency.

Too Much Oil Is Worse Than Too Little

Overfilling oil can cause serious engine damage. Add oil gradually and check the dipstick each time.

Recommended Oil Type

Full Synthetic Formula

Use 5W-30 Full Synthetic Oil

Your generator requires 5W-30 Full Synthetic oil for optimal performance and protection. Using the correct oil type and viscosity is critical for engine health and longevity, especially in Houston’s climate conditions.

Full synthetic oil provides superior protection across a wider temperature range, better resistance to breakdown, and improved fuel efficiency—all of which extend the life of your generator.

After Extended Use

Check oil after 4–5 days of continuous operation during a power outage.

Seasonal Check

Always inspect before storm season or after 6–8 months of inactivity.

During Annual Service

Oil is changed during routine annual maintenance visits by our technicians.

Follow Your Manual

Refer to your generator’s user manual for model-specific service intervals.

Step-by-Step Oil Check Walkthrough

This DIY video walks you through checking the oil and adding the correct amount safely and efficiently. Our technician demonstrates the exact process on a 22kW generator.

Watch to learn where the dipstick is located, how to read oil levels correctly, and how to add oil without overfilling—the most common and costly mistake.

Not comfortable doing this yourself? No problem — our expert technicians are available to perform oil checks and top-offs as part of our maintenance programs.

Safe Oil Check Process

Follow these four steps every time you check or add oil to your generator.

1
Turn Off the Breaker

Switch the generator breaker to the OFF position. Do not use the Emergency Stop switch for routine maintenance.

2
Let it Cool Down

Allow the generator to cool completely before touching any engine components or removing the oil dipstick.

3
Check the Oil Level

Remove and wipe the dipstick, then reinsert it fully and remove it again to get an accurate reading of your current oil level.

4
Add Oil Gradually

Use 5W-30 Full Synthetic oil only. Add a small amount at a time, checking the dipstick after each addition to avoid overfilling.
